The AI Act and its Impact on the Justice Sector

The AlgoSoc Roundtable on the AI Act and its Impact on the Justice Sector is taking place (online) on June 6th, 2024 from 12:00 - 13:30h, where we will explore the implications of the EU's AI Act on the judiciary.

As the AIA is expected to soon be adopted and officially published, its impact on legal proceedings involving AI systems, including both high-risk and general-purpose AI, becomes increasingly pertinent. AlgoSoc invites you to engage with speakers from academia and the judiciary as we delve into key questions surrounding fairness, transparency, accountability, and innovation in AI regulation. The roundtable will focus on how the judiciary can navigate the complexities of interpreting and implementing the AI Act, and explore opportunities for leveraging technology to enhance access to justice. Topics include the risk of bias confirmation in AI, potential judicial stagnation due to AI's conservative nature, and the trade-off between efficiency and equity in AI-mediated judicial decisions. Another crucial aspect involves oversight and supervision of AI within the judiciary. We will delve into Opinion No. 26 (2023) from the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE), which highlights the importance of maintaining judicial control over such oversight, rather than relying on external supervisory bodies mentioned in the AI Act.
